I have been on a computer for over 22 years and have seen an explosion in its
use. The shear volume of applications, the unending variety of hardware and
the need for more keeps myself and others in a constant hunt for information.
In order to describe how I can assist in the world of computers I have decided to segment this area in to hardware (the physical components of a computer) and software.
Hardware:
In the early to mid 90's it was easy to earn money by building computers from
scratch. Like others I would pride myself with building custom systems that
ranged from high end video editing machines to low end, yet reliable, computers
for the average Joe. Alas these days have drawn to an end with the Internet
and companies such as Gateway or Dell. Personally if someone ask me to build
a machine now I would refer them to Dell (for midlevel boxes) or to other sites
for custom machines. I recognize that bulk sales is the only way one can obtain
pricing that is competitive and I doubt anyone can beat Dell in this regard.
Computer repair/upgrades however is still needed by many and this is a service
I provide. For most users the upkeep of a computer is a cost savings as opposed
to purchasing a new machine. While there are exspectations most users prefer
to spend a small amount in order to keep their equipment up and running as opposed
to the purchase of a new machine. Overall its not the price of a new PC its
the time & effort needed to transfer all the applications/data to this new
machine that is the determining factor.
Software:
While not as tangible as hardware this is my favorite part of computer work.
Aside from web design, web hosting and networking I write custom applications
do client specifications. A few examples are:
Kung
Fu game - best viewed with resolutions greater than 800x600
Skydiving SIM
trainer - used to study for a skydiving license.
LiarsPoker - an online version of an
old favorite.
Xmaslist - A slick application originally
written because my children kept telling me what they wanted for Christmas.
This starts around ThanksGiving and usually ends December 24th. This program
provides a way for them to enter their desired gifts and as a way for the parents
to track expenses.
Other software titles include an Emergency tracking software package for large
organizations, small internet based games, and "one off" applications
used by small business.
And finally there seems to be no end to the number of people who need small VB/VBA applets as well as databases. These users are primarily from the business community although there is the odd individual who needs this work performed.
